Conductor Ampacity Basics
Chapter 2 - Wiring and Protection · Article / reference: 310.15; Table 310.16
Key Requirements
Conductors shall have ampacity sufficient for the load after required adjustment and correction factors are applied.
The allowable ampacity table is selected for the conductor insulation, material, and installation conditions.
Termination temperature limitations in 110.14(C) can control the usable ampacity column.
More than three current-carrying conductors in a raceway or cable can require adjustment under 310.15(C)(1).
Ambient temperatures other than the table basis can require correction.
Exceptions / Watch Items
Specific equipment articles, small-conductor rules, dwelling service/feeders, motors, HVAC, and other loads can create different sizing paths.
Common Field Gotchas
The 90 C column is often used for adjustment math, but final ampacity remains subject to terminal and equipment limitations.
Neutral current-carrying status is a rule question, not a blanket yes/no shortcut.
