Box Fill
Chapter 3 - Wiring Methods / Materials · Article / reference: 314.16
Key Requirements
Boxes shall be of sufficient size to provide free space for all enclosed conductors.
Volume allowances are based on conductor size and the applicable volume allowance table.
Each conductor that originates outside and terminates or is spliced in the box is counted as required by 314.16(B)(1).
One or more internal cable clamps are counted using a single volume allowance based on the largest conductor present.
A device or equipment yoke is counted as two conductor volumes based on the largest conductor connected to that yoke.
Equipment grounding conductors are counted under the specific allowance rules of 314.16(B)(5).
Exceptions / Watch Items
Check listed box volume markings and applicable raceway-body rules.
Barriered boxes and unusual fittings can change the calculation path.
Common Field Gotchas
Pigtails that do not leave the box are not automatically counted like entering conductors.
Do not forget internal clamps or multiple yokes.
