Motor full-load current used for conductor and branch-circuit short-circuit/ground-fault protection calculations is generally determined from the Article 430 tables as directed by 430.6.
A single motor branch-circuit conductor shall have ampacity not less than 125% of the motor full-load current under 430.22.
Motor overload protection and branch-circuit short-circuit/ground-fault protection are separate functions.
The maximum rating or setting of branch-circuit short-circuit/ground-fault protective devices is determined under 430.52 and the applicable table.
Exceptions / Watch Items
Nameplate current is used where the Code specifically directs it, including overload-related rules.
Common Field Gotchas
Do not use nameplate amps for every Article 430 calculation.
Do not treat the breaker as motor overload protection.
