Transformer Protection Basics

Key Requirements

  • Transformer overcurrent protection shall be provided in accordance with 450.3 and the applicable table.
  • Primary-only and primary-plus-secondary protection paths have different permitted percentages.
  • Transformer protection does not automatically establish compliant protection for secondary conductors.

  • Supervised locations and transformers over or under specific impedance/voltage conditions can use different table provisions.
