Metal Water Pipe / Electrode

Article 250 - Grounding / Bonding · Article / reference: 250.50; 250.52(A)(1); 250.53(D); 250.104(A)

Key Requirements

  • If a metal underground water pipe qualifies as a grounding electrode, it shall be included in the grounding electrode system.
  • A metal underground water pipe electrode shall be supplemented by an additional electrode as required by 250.53(D)(2).
  • Interior metal water piping shall be bonded as required by 250.104(A).

Exceptions / Watch Items

  • Electrode qualification depends on direct contact with earth for the required length and continuity conditions.
